We are a vibrant community for high-school students in Halifax who are passionate about learning new languages. We aim to make language learning fun, practical, and engaging for both everyday use and academic growth. Whether you're a beginner or a language native, join us as we explore the beauty of different languages, & cultures!
The Story
At HFX Language Exchange, we learn, have fun and grow together as a community. Stay connected by following our social media and don't miss out on daily posts, stories, and reminders about upcoming activities. We will also share helpful study tips, fun language facts, movies and more to keep you motivated and engaged.
What We Do
We follow a monthly schedule with 5 meetings a month every Saturday, both in person and online. Each month we will pick a topic (such as school, daily life, or holidays) to cover with lessons, materials and activities relating to that topic.
Learn
Helping you prepare for tests, but also for everyday life.
Our goal is to support members in developing all four essential language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing (primarily in Mandarin Chinese, but with opportunities to explore other languages.)
Whether you're here for academic growth or practical language use, we tailor our activities to meet everyone's needs.

Join us for a number of bonding events at the end of each month where you can get to know your peers better and have fun!

Enjoy
Making learning enjoyable is the key to success.
To practice the 4 skills mentioned, we will have many cafe and library in person meetings together where we can exchange and speak to each other in the desired language.
We will watch movies, shows, other media and create fun content together to further challenge ourselves to communicate as well as immerse ourselves in the language we aim to learn.
Attendance Policy ☻
Consistency is key! Our executive board and language helper volunteers are working hard to plan, create and teach our weekly lessons to help you achieve your language goals. No matter how ambitious or small your goals may be, it is inevitable that the only way to reach them is to take action and participate in habitual practice and learning! We expect our members to be active in our community and thus, have a couple notes regarding meeting attendance as follows:
1. Each month, you are expected to attend at least 2 of our 3 Zoom or in-person lesson meetings (excluding bonding event)
2. Please inform us of your reason for absense prior to the meeting
3. Attendance can be made up by submitting all missed tasks from the meeting
4. Attendance will be checked and recorded at every meeting
